Who doesn’t love a good surprise? Flying Lotus, out of the blue, drops “The Room” with singer/songwriter Devin Tracy. It’s a return to form, going back to his hauntingly beautiful jazzy/hip hop productions. Lately Flylo has been more into scoring productions, creating the soundtrack to the Netflix anime series Yasuke, and not to forget the theme song to Magic Johnson’s new series “They Call Me Magic”. However, he’s left us with a longing of his unique song productions and his signature atmospheric mixing for the music heads.

“The Room” is at the core a love song, with Devin Tracy providing romantic lines the likes they’re straight out of a Pablo Neruda collection. Devin pleads, “There’s a side of me I tend to fight, watch me fall again deep into your eyes”. A tender message to an irresistible siren that sweeps you like a strong breeze the moment you meet her eyes. Couple that with the Spanish influenced guitar lines in the background, and you have a jazzy fantasy in your ears that’ll let you sink into your chair.

This release is paired with the B Side “You Don’t Know”, a Neo soul track that would easily fit into a Hiatus Kaiyote playlist. Swaying in and out of the single jazzy chord progression and Fender Rhodes sounds, it’s a gentle tune with vocal melodies that feel free enough to be improvised. There’s a framework for the melody, but it feels as though the singer is free-flowing throughout the whole two minute jam.

Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus, has remained one of the most important producers of our time. It’s harder and harder nowadays to find producers with a signature style, which is what makes his releases so exciting. He’s worked with everyone under the sun such as the likes of George Clinton, Thom Yorke, Herbie Hancock, and even Kendrick Lamar. This newest release is a reminder that his brain is still firing off at a high creative rate, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
